About Me

About me

Andrea Smith Clinical Psychologist - Conscious Psychology

Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are. Choosing authenticity means cultivating the courage to be imperfect

- Brene Brown

Andrea is a warm and caring Clinical Psychologist who values authentic connection and helping people to feel truly heard and understood. She is integrative and client-centred in her approach, with the therapeutic relationship as the foundation of this, incorporating various scientific and evidence-based treatments in her practice.

“Outside of my professional life, I am a wife and a mother to two young children and two fur-babies. We love spending time outdoors gardening in our backyard, playing at the beach, and going on bushwalks with the dogs. When I get moments to myself, I love practicing yoga, eating chocolate, binge-watching a Netflix series, and meditating in my hammock chair out back – life is about balance right?”

My Approach

My approach is grounded in creating a safe and reflective space for my clients where they can create deep and lasting changes within themselves and in their lives. Whether their goal is personal growth, developing new skills for managing the challenges inherent to being human, or healing from some of life’s adversities, it is an honour to walk alongside my clients as they develop greater self-awareness, self-understanding, and self-compassion.

I work in a client-centred way, meaning that I work collaboratively with my clients to determine what is the best approach to help them reach their desired goals in therapy and life more broadly. The most important thing to me is that my clients feel empowered in this process, and that therapy be a space where they feel truly safe, seen, and heard. I integrate many Evidence-Based Therapies in my work, including practical approaches such as building tools for regulation, anxiety or stress management, and concrete action plans to improve situations and bring about change in our daily habits and functioning. I also often utilise more experiential techniques, including EMDR and Ego State Therapy (eg. Inner Child Work). Depending on the client, some of this work can include identifying unhelpful patterns in your life, maladaptive core beliefs, exploring the roots of the challenges you’re currently facing, and the possible impact of earlier life experiences. This can involve using imagery and other experiential methods to reprocess and shift the way our brains have stored negative past experiences, unhelpful beliefs, and patterned physiological responses and emotions, thereby releasing their hold on us, and enabling people to consciously choose how they want to show up in their lives, for themselves and their loved ones.

Over the years, I have seen some remarkable changes in my clients – being freed from the hold their past traumas and anxieties have had on them, developing a deeper and more compassionate understanding of themselves and their history, a more mindful awareness of self and others, and greater clarity about their needs going forward into the future. I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing clients embody these changes alongside a sense of personal empowerment and confidence to begin to live their lives more fully, and more in line with what matters to them most.

Some of the therapy approaches I incorporate in my work:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
Ego State Therapy / Parts Work (eg. Inner Child Work)
Mindfulness
Emotionally-Focused Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Interpersonal Therapy
Attachment Based Therapy

My Approach

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

Where appropriate, Andrea enjoys incorporating EMDR into her therapeutic interventions, as it is a highly effective and evidence-based therapy not only for the treatment of trauma and PTSD, but also in treating more general conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, panic, phobias, complicated grief, and so on. Some clients prefer this modality in that it differs from traditional talk therapy in multiple ways; there is often less emphasis on discussing the details of a trauma or difficult experience, and clients typically experience a significant reduction in their symptoms over a shorter period of time. EMDR works by going to the root cause of the issue, which in most cases, includes identifying an earlier life experience (or series of experiences) which have significantly impacted the way that we see ourselves, and the way that we feel in the world. We then work on reprocessing and desensitizing this experience, and consequently storing it in the brain and body in a way that is more healthy and adaptive for the individual.

Though the experience and outcomes are unique to each individual, the following are some of the common shifts people notice after doing EMDR. Often there is a change in the imagery (eg. traumatic events are less vivid; they may feel distanced somehow or that they are more truly in the past). There is also often a shift in the emotional intensity around the experience (eg. feelings like fear, sadness and anger are processed, expressed, and reduced). There can also be a shift in the thoughts that go along with that experience, which is generally a shift to more adaptative and healthy thoughts about the self that are felt as “true” on a whole-body level.

Perinatal Menta Health

Perinatal Mental Health

Through Andrea's professional experience working with clients in the perinatal period, and also in her own experience on the rollercoaster of becoming a parent, she has become extremely passionate about supporting soon-to-be and new parents adjust to the journey of having children. Though it’s often a beautiful and enriching experience, having a child can also bring up many of our own anxieties, past traumas, unmet needs, and relationship challenges. Andrea feels honoured to walk alongside clients while they navigate this landscape.
